A private place to share family photos (that isn't Facebook)

How to set up a private family space for photos, updates and events where only the people you choose can see anything, with no ads, no ranking and no data sold.

Most families share photos in one of three places: a giant text thread that eats storage, a Facebook group that sits next to ads and strangers' politics, or nowhere, which is how a whole year of a kid's life ends up only on one parent's phone. Here's a fourth way that takes ten minutes to set up.

Make the group first

On POINT, create a private group and name it after the family. Private groups are invite-only. Nothing posted inside is visible to anyone who isn't a member, the group doesn't appear in search, and there is no way for an outsider to stumble into it. Invite the people, and only the people, you want.

Then post the first few things yourself: this week's photos, a short update, the next birthday. An empty room makes people leave; a room with three posts makes them answer.

Who should be in it

Everyone who'd want to see the kids, and nobody who'd make anyone think twice before posting. That's the test. A family group works when the quiet cousin feels fine posting a blurry photo of a soccer game. If the group is big enough that people start self-censoring, make a smaller one inside it. You can be in as many as you want.

What goes where

  • Photos of the week go in the group as posts. Up to 20 per post, they show as a grid, people react and comment under them.
  • The keepers go in albums: the trip, the holidays, the first year. Albums live on a Space, so make one on yours or on a parent's and keep adding.
  • Events handle the reunion, the birthday party, the graduation. People say if they're coming, and reminders happen without a follow-up text.
  • Birthdays are built in. POINT tells the group whose day it is.
  • The quick stuff can stay in the text thread. POINT is for what you'd want to find again in five years.

Getting the grandparents on

Send them a link, not instructions. POINT works in any browser, so the first visit needs no app. When they're comfortable, the Android app is on Google Play; iPhone is on the way and Safari works in the meantime. The Home feed is simply the newest posts from their people, in order, so there is nothing to learn about how to "work" it. If they can read a text thread, they can read POINT.

The privacy answers, plainly

There are no ads on POINT, which means there's no reason to profile anyone. Private groups are private. Friends-only posts go to friends only. Nobody follows anybody without consent because friendship is two-way. You can export everything you've posted, any time, and you can delete your account yourself, from the settings, without emailing anyone. POINT is made by a small Florida company, Aftershock Network, and the money comes from optional memberships, not from your family's attention.

Ten-minute setup

  1. Create your account and give your Space a photo.
  2. Create a private group named after the family.
  3. Post three things in it.
  4. Invite the people. Text the link to anyone who won't see the notification.
  5. Add the next birthday or event.

That's a private family network. Add to it for a year and you'll have the thing the text thread never gave you: a place where all of it is, in order, findable, and yours.

Questions people ask

Can I make a group that only my family can see?
Yes. Private groups on POINT are invite-only. Only members see the posts, photos and events inside, and the group doesn't show up in search.
Can grandparents use it?
If they can use Facebook they can use POINT. It works in a browser without installing anything, the Android app is on Google Play, and the Home feed is simply the newest posts in order.
Are kids allowed?
Members must be 13 or older. Younger kids appear in the photos their parents post, which is how most families use it.
Does POINT sell data or show ads?
No ads, no data sales, no ranking. The business runs on optional memberships, not on your family's attention.

Try the thing we’re describing.

POINT is free, there are no ads, and your feed is your friends in order. Your page lives at yourpointspace.com/u/you. Takes two minutes.
